Home with Private Natural History Museum Listed for $13.85 million

The Wall Street Journal gives us an inside look at a very unique home for sale in New Canaan, Conn. The 7-acre estate boasts a 5-bed, 9-bath home with more than 15,000 square feet, a 7-car garage and every standard luxury.

But the real kicker is a two-level animal museum.

The homeowner creatively preserved more than 100 animals he personally hunted — from the standard bear and mountain sheep to the more unusual rhino, lion and baboon.

But the animals aren’t merely hung on the walls; they’re displayed as you would find them in their native habitats. For instance, you’ll find two wolves posed attacking a musk ox in artificial snow. Take a look at the cool pictures >>

If taxidermy gives you the creeps (as it does for me), don’t let that keep you from buying the property. The sellers can redo the space at no extra cost.

Have a side of real estate with your turkey with these holiday tips

thanksgiving-decor-homeThanksgiving is around the corner, meaning less focus on buying and selling a home, and more focus on preparing your current home for the holidays, shopping for presents and getting together with family.

If you’re like me, you’ll probably check out the movie “New Moon” to see what all the hype is about (if you haven’t seen it already). FrontDoor got into the vampire spirit with a slideshow showcasing the Cullen House from the popular “Twilight” movies, which is listed for under $3.3 million.

But if you’re among those hard-core homebuyers or sellers who won’t (or can’t) stop just because turkey’s on the table, here are some holiday tips from your friends at HGTV’s FrontDoor.com.

Help Bernie Madoff’s victims: Buy his Palm Beach home listed for $8.5 million

bernie-madoff-palm-beach-house-for-saleFrom our Cool Houses Daily files:

Another one of disgraced stockbroker Bernie Madoff’s properties is on the market — this time in Palm Beach, Florida.

Just months after Madoff was sentenced to a 150-year prison term, the Palm Beach home he owned with wife Ruth is up for sale for just under $8.5 million.

Like his Hamptons property, which sold in mid-September, the home is relatively bare inside since U.S. Marshalls have cleared out the Madoff’s furnishings and personal belongings to sell at auction.

The rest of the furniture will be cleared out when a lucky buyer wins this unfortunate historical icon. All the profits from the sale of the home will go towards restitution for the victims of Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

The listing touts the property as “a return to classic Florida island living,” and something about the property’s casual furnishings and landscaping are reminiscent of days gone by.

The home was purchased and renovated in the early 90s by developer Michael Burrows, so it does include fairly recent updates and some of his classic features: a 22-foot Cypress beamed ceiling with stainless steel hardware, a Honduran Mahogany front door, and large rooms with high ceilings. The home also has enough closets to fit even a Ruth Madoff-sized wardrobe.

Nashville home of NFL star Steve McNair on market for $3 million

tennessee-titan-steve-mcnair

NFL fans are mourning the loss of football great Steve McNair, who was tragically killed on July 4.

The former quarterback of the Tennessee Titans and later the Baltimore Ravens was found in a Nashville condo he rented, shot dead, along with his 20-year-old girlfriend Sahel Kazemi. Police ruled McNair’s death a homicide and are investigating the case as a possible murder-suicide.

According to reports, the then-married McNair had planned to divorce his wife. The couple had listed their 9-bed, 9.5-bath mansion in the Green Hills neighborhood of Nashville for $3 million.

Perhaps a die-hard Titan fan will find value in walking the halls McNair once did.
